Girls (even some boys) all over the world love Justin Bieber. They swoon, scream, and draw hearts with his name all looking to have a Bieber story to tell their friends at school. These charming Bieber tales are not just reserved for adoring fans – I have a Bieber story of my own (of course sans the swooning, screaming, and drawing of hearts). While in school and studying to become an Orthodontist, I learned that one of my professors was treating Justin Bieber with Invisalign. It was a coincidence that my professor was the mother of Scooter Braun, Justin Bieber’s manager.

So as a bonus assignment to the course curriculum, we began to analyze the Bieb’s smile, using before and after Invisalign pictures from magazines and such.

Here is what we found

Justin Bieber suffered from a common problem known as crowding. This is when the upper and lower teeth overlap each other and don’t line up perfectly straight. You can even check to see if your teeth are crowded in a mirror. There are several negative effects that Justin Bieber may have experienced from crowding including – difficulty cleaning teeth, food getting stuck in hard to reach places, lots of plaque buildup from not cleaning teeth properly, lower self-esteem, altered self-confidence, and even more important for Justin Bieber – his singing ability.

Allow me to explain – you don’t have to be a singer to know that there are three important muscles that help you sing – your diaphragm, vocal cords and tongue. When Justin Bieber’s teeth were crowded – his tongue had less space to maneuver in his mouth – giving him less control over the sounds he was able to produce.

As a celebrity, Justin wanted a solution that fit in with his lifestyle. Based on his custom treatment plan, his Orthodontist used a treatment of Invisalign. This is where a series of made-to-order, clear aligners were created specifically for him. These aligners have an added comfort level because they are typically made of a smooth, BPA-free plastic that don’t irritate the cheeks and gums like traditional metal braces often do. Justin’s task was to simply wear them for approximately 22 hours a day, and remove them when he ate or to brush and floss his teeth.

Every two weeks he wore a new set of custom aligners and as he wore each set of aligners, his teeth gently and gradually begin to shift into place. To monitor his progress, in between red carpets and Bieber concerts, Justin had occasional checkups with his Orthodontist, usually only every six weeks or so. And because they’re virtually invisible, most people didn’t even notice him wearing them.

Here’s an added benefit – since his teeth weren’t covered by wires and brackets, he was able to see improvement much sooner – probably leading to improved self-confidence and self-esteem. So much so that, in Justin’s case, every gossip column had him photographed on red carpets – smiling with his Invisaligns.

(By the way, here is a video of Bieber himself showing off his Invisaligns – Enjoy!)

Invisalign was successful for Justin Bieber and it could be for you too – here’s a quick summary of his benefits:

1. Clear and invisible treatment

2. No lip or cheek irritation from metal braces

3. Invisalign trays are removable for a big event like a rehearsal, musical performance, or a first date

4. Easy to clean Invisalign trays

5. Less frequent appointments

6. Improved self esteem and confidence

7. Teeth are easier to clean

8. Improved singing potential

Hello doctor; when I put my braces on they just didn’t feel right. I told myself my teeth are straight but the only problem I have are my shaped like vampire teeth that I wanna straight out to match my teeth.so dr. Can you help me.I got my braces today at 5/8/13 and my I told my mom there unconfterable and she said they take time to straighten out; i cant go back to the dentist and tell them to remove my braces because my mom already paid for the braces with a high price and she won’t aprove that I get them removed unless they pay her back .

    • It takes time to get use to braces. We suggest you stick with them for awhile – as a test run. Also, consult with your orthodontist and bring up your concerns, they will be able to help and provide advice.
