Creating Space for Healthy Growth, Breathing & Facial Development

A child’s upper jaw plays an important role in more than just straight teeth. Its development can influence dental alignment, bite function, facial growth, and nasal breathing. When the upper jaw is narrow, early palatal expansion may offer several benefits beyond creating room for permanent teeth.

The Potential Benefits of Palatal Expansion

In appropriately selected growing children, expansion may help:

  • Create Space: Provide additional room for permanent teeth and reduce developing crowding.
  • Improve Bite Alignment: Correct crossbites and support a more balanced relationship between the upper and lower jaws.
  • Support Facial Development: Improve upper jaw width and dental arch proportions during important growth years.
  • Support Nasal Breathing: Increase nasal cavity dimensions and potentially improve nasal airflow in certain children.
  • Encourage Better Oral Function: Create more favourable conditions for tongue posture, lip closure, and oral muscle function.
  • Simplify Future Treatment: Potentially reduce the complexity of orthodontic treatment later in childhood.

When Should Your Child Be Assessed?

We encourage parents to consider an early jaw development assessment around age 7, earlier (age 5) if signs of restricted growth are present. These may include crowded baby teeth, limited spacing, narrow dental arches, crossbites, habitual mouth breathing, or persistent oral habits. While the American Association of Orthodontists recommends an orthodontic evaluation by age 7, some developmental concerns may benefit from earlier attention.

Early Assessment. Thoughtful Intervention.

Not every child needs palatal expansion, and early assessment doesn’t necessarily mean early treatment.

At Aura Orthodontics, we evaluate the developing child as a whole; considering jaw growth, facial development, bite alignment, oral habits, and breathing patterns. When indicated, early expansion may help guide development during a valuable window of growth. In other cases, careful monitoring may be the best approach.

Healthy growth starts with recognizing the signs early.

Book an early orthodontic assessment with Aura Orthodontics to evaluate your child’s jaw development, bite, and alignment. Our team will determine whether palatal expansion may be beneficial and recommend personalized treatment options to support a healthy, confident smile.
